Audit real screens before creating components. Look for patterns that teams repeatedly solve: form validation, empty states, navigation, data density, destructive actions, loading behavior, and responsive structure.
Build a small, dependable foundation
- Define durable tokens for color, type, spacing, and motion.
- Create accessible primitives before complex composites.
- Document when a pattern should and should not be used.
- Test components in realistic product contexts.
Treat documentation as part of the interface
Examples should show complete states, not only the ideal state. Include error behavior, long content, keyboard interaction, mobile layouts, and guidance for product teams.
Adoption grows when the system answers product questions, not only implementation questions.
Create a lightweight contribution path
A central team should protect quality without becoming a bottleneck. Use short proposals, visible review criteria, automated visual checks, and regular release notes so contributors understand how the system evolves.
Measure what improves
Track adoption, duplicated patterns, accessibility issues, time from design to production, and the number of exceptions teams need. These signals reveal whether the system is simplifying work.
A successful design system feels less like a library and more like a shared language for building the product.
